This workshop offers an in-depth exploration of four common big band styles, focusing on rhythm section grooves and stylistic requirements for horn sections. Participants will interpret written parts, adapt repertoire, and perform a simple tune in swing, rock, ballad, and Latin styles. The emphasis is on authenticity and attention to detail.
In this workshop we will explore similarities and differences between four common big band styles. While the clinic will have substantial focus on authenticy in creating the rhythm section grooves, it also clearly addresses the stylistic requirements for the horn sections.
The aim of this workshop is to have band members and directors become aware of the significantly different performance techniques when performing in varied styles. It will involve interpretation of the written parts in each style as well as tonal and articulation variation.
Repertoire for this workshop would ideally be from the band’s current library, but there will be a discussion prior to the workshop between Peter and the director about this.
This workshop is an exciting opportunity for musicians and directors to delve into the intricacies of big band styles! There will be five different sections:
- Swing Style: Swing is characterized by its lively rhythm, syncopation, and danceable feel. The rhythm section (piano, bass, drums, and guitar) plays a crucial role in creating that infectious swing groove. Horn sections emphasize legato phrasing, expressive dynamics, and well-articulated lines.
- Rock Style: In contrast to swing, rock-style big band music leans toward a more driving and energetic rhythm. The rhythm section adapts to a rock beat, often featuring electric guitar and a stronger backbeat. Horn sections may incorporate punchy staccato phrases and a different tonal palette.
- Ballad Style: Ballads are slow-tempo pieces that allow for expressive playing. The rhythm section provides gentle support, emphasizing sustained chords and subtle dynamics. Horn sections focus on lyrical melodies, vibrato, and emotional phrasing.
- Latin Style (Bossa): Latin jazz infuses elements from Afro-Cuban and Brazilian music. The rhythm section introduces clave rhythms, syncopated patterns, and percussion instruments like congas and timbales. Horn sections explore sultry melodies, syncopation, and colorful harmonies.
- Performance of a Simple Tune in All Four Styles: This section ties everything together. Participants will take a familiar tune and adapt it to each style—swinging, rocking, ballad, and bossa nova. It’s a chance to showcase versatility and creativity.
