Upskilling for newer jazz band directors

60 -120 mins$185 – $300

Often music teachers are given ensemble direction roles outside of their comfort zone. This workshop aims to support ensemble directors who may be more experienced in directing in other genres (e.g. Concert Bands, Orchestras, Choirs, Rock Bands). The topics covered in this workshop may include:

  • How the role of a big band director differs from that of a concert band / orchestra conductor
  • Connecting with the tradition
  • How to set-up your band for rehearsals and performances
  • Fundamentals of swing
  • Important musical relationships within the structure of a Big Band:
    • Relationships and purpose of each instrument within the rhythm section
    • The role of each chair within each of the horn sections (saxes, trumpets & trombones)
    • Important cross-section teamwork (eg. Bass trom & bari sax)
  • 5 recordings that you and your band MUST listen to
  • 5 concepts that must be addressed in each and every Big Band rehearsal
  • Choosing quality big band style charts
  • Conducting/directing skills that you WILL, and may not need
  • Why correct instrumentation is fundamentally important

*Price is for all workshops in metropolitan Melbourne. Extra costs may be required for workshops in other locations.
