This workshop explores the unique role of each member in a big band. It focuses on the responsibilities of players in different sections, emphasizing how understanding these roles leads to increased ownership and contribution to the band. Topics cover sax, trumpet, trombone sections, rhythm section, and essential connections across sections for an effective big band.
This workshop, suitable for as a director or band workshop, delves into the unique role that each and every player has in a big band. Rather like a chamber group, the traditional big band is a place where EVERY player has role that is most often not taken by any other member of the group. When students understand the importance of their role, they most often take increased ownership and responsibility in their contribution to the band.
Typically this workshop will be in five parts:
- The role of each chair in the Sax section
- The role of each chair in the Trumpet section
- The role of each chair in the Trombone section
- The role of each member of the Rhythm section
- The connections across the sections that are essential to an effective big band (eg. lead trumpet/lead alto/lead trombone, bari sax/bass trom/bass, rhythm section/soloists…)
*Price is for all workshops in metropolitan Melbourne. Extra costs may be required for workshops in other locations.
